ECA-4027: A Wide Temperature 1U Open RAN/MEC Appliance with IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol for Accelerating 5G Deployments

Lanner today announced the release of the ECA-4027, a wide temperature short depth 1U Open RAN/MEC Appliance with IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol. ECA-4027 is powered by 12 or 16 cores Intel® Xeon® D-2100 series processor (codenamed Skylake-D), and is most suitable for 5G Open RAN DU, Edge Cloud, and AI edge-focused applications with extensive configuration options.

The high-performance appliance supports a carrier-grade IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol PTPv2 to synchronize distributed device clocks within a sub-micro-second range to deliver precise timing signals, including time stamping input and schedule outputs, making it supremely suitable to run packet-based applications between remote radio unit (RU) and distributed unit (DU), where time accuracy is critical.

ECA-4027 has multiple front I/O ports including 8x 10G SFP+, 2x 40G QSFP+, 1x USB 3.0, in addition to a PCI-E expansion slot to support an FPGA or GPU card, making it an ideal solution as Edge AI server for smart city applications, Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) server for 5G Edge Cloud, and Open RAN platform for DU.

Being compact with a short depth chassis of 438 x 371 x 44 mm, and its wide operating temperature range from -40 to 65°C, ECA-4027 can be easily installed in outdoor limited spaces such as pole-mount cabinets and edge server rooms for edge computing and network virtualization.

Design for easy maintenance in mind, the ECA-4027’s rich I/O and power outlet are all located on the front side panel, including a fan tray system that can be accessed without needing to open the top cover. This fan tray system provides a unique side airflow cooling system to promote heat dissipation to further improve system reliability.

ECA-4027 has an on-board Trusted Platform Module (TPM) for secure crypto-processing to provide tamper resistance at the hardware level. The platform is also protected with BIOS-based security authentication feature, and Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) for remote management, enabling WAN efficiency, network configuration, and remote firmware update, all without compromising on reliability and security.
